DIVA by DIVA: A Celebration of Women
O’Connell & Company’s award-winning original hit celebrates its 18th year (or is it our 19th? … a DIVA never reveals her age!) as WNY’s longest-running theatrical production! DIVA by DIVA is our “Celebration of Women” … with songs, readings, humor & quotes by, for & about women. Although DIVA by DIVA is gender specific, it is not gender exclusive … men like it too!
Speaking of men … we have added Gentlemen Prefer DIVAs to our rotation of Wednesday night entertainment! This is the same cabaret format of songs, stories and humor with the gents joining the DIVAs to explore the unique relationship between men and women!
We are also doing a couple of special Suffragist DIVA performances this season, commemorating the signing of the 19th Amendment.

FUNDRAISING WITH DIVA
Over the years, O’Connell & Company has raised thousands of dollars for various charities and organizations with special performances of DIVA by DIVA. The uniqueness of DIVA enables us to design a performance specifically geared toward your event and audience. The location choice is yours — at a private club, a restaurant or banquet facility … or on our stage at The Park School. You set your ticket price based on event and performance expenses and your target fundraising goal. We will work with you to make your fundraiser a success. If you would like to have “DIVA by DIVA” as a partner for your next fundraising event, please contact us at 716-848-0800 or by e-mail at OConnellGetInfo@aol.com
A fundraising DIVA performance on October 17, 2012 raised $12,000 for The Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. During the 2010-2011 Season, O’Connell & Company conducted a raffle to celebrate the 12th Anniversary of DIVA by DIVA. Tickets were sold at each DIVA performance throughout the season and the drawing was held on 3/31/11 for the Grand Prize: A full DIVA performance to use as a fundraiser for a charity or organization of your choice, at a location of your choice. The lucky winner was Mary Ellen Puleri who, when called the next day, thought it was an April Fool’s joke! When finally convinced that she had, indeed, won the prize, she said she was unsure of how she would use her prize and would call us when she had an idea. Many months passed, and when we contacted her nearly a year later she finally had a plan … during the intervening months, she had lost two dear friends to cancer and wanted to honor their lives and their spirits with her prize DIVA performance. Her goal was to sell 400 tickets and sell out the show — and she DID — raising $12,000 for the charity of choice of the two families: Roswell Park Alliance Foundation. As a bonus for this wonderful and inspiring evening, Mary Ellen chose the daughters of her two friends to join her as Guest DIVAS for the performance. It was a wonderful night of laughs and memories for everyone. This performance and result was exactly what Mary Kate O’Connell envisioned when she had the idea of a raffle where everyone involved was “paying it forward”. BRAVO to Mary Ellen and all of her friends and family for making this special evening a smashing success!
THE DIVA STORY
“DIVA by DIVA: A Celebration of Women!” is Western New York’s longest-running theatrical production. This fast-paced cabaret style show filled with songs, readings, poetry, humor & quotes by, for & about women was created by Mary Kate O’Connell (Artistic/Executive Director of O’Connell & Company) in 1999 as a 2-week performance honoring Women’s History Month. Now, nearly 17 years later, audiences still flock to share in the “DIVA experience”. The show is “gender specific”, but not “gender exclusive” … men enjoy it too! The ever-changing “DIVA by DIVA…” cast is drawn from all aspects of the community: performing arts, the business & corporate arenas, as well as the private & philanthropic sector – making this an extraordinary network of remarkable women. At any given performance, the cast can range in size from 7 to 27 and might include a politician, a singer, a teacher, an actress, an international banker, a cancer survivor…a sister, a daughter, a mother, a friend. All of these women join together, giving their voice and talent to, as O’Connell puts it, “redefining the DIVA … it’s a happening, really.” Over the years more than 300 women have been a part of the “DIVA by DIVA…” cast. The show has been performed throughout Upstate New York as well as Southern Ontario & Pennsylvania. In 2004 a special performance was held at the prestigious Players Club in New York City & in 2007 the DIVAS traveled to Ireland, taking the stage at several venues in The Emerald Isle including Point Boise in Galway & The Moat Theatre near Dublin. Perfect as a fundraising tool, “DIVA by DIVA…” performances have helped raise a great deal of money for women’s & children’s charities in the WNY community. A favorite charity has been Cornerstone Manor in Buffalo, a shelter for abused & homeless women & their children. The unique quality of “DIVA by DIVA…” is that no 2 shows have ever had exactly the same cast or the same script. Performers arrive an hour before the show dressed in “DIVA” black and sparkly jewelry; they gather, chatter, get their scripts & a few director’s notes – then it’s ON WITH THE SHOW!!!
“On behalf of the Buffalo Zoo, I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to participate in our joint fundraiser, DIVAs GONE WILD! You and your fellow DIVAs are magnificent!
This exceptionally bright, witty, sassy, talented and touching performance was enjoyed by all. Thank you for your efforts in tailoring the script to reflect our care and concern for our animal friends. We appreciate your assistance in helping to spread our important conservation message.
We so enjoyed working with you and your DIVAs (including Rosy); all were so helpful and friendly. We look forward to working with you again in the future.
